Blog Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway Grimm Consequences by Kate SeRine

Top Five Reasons to Fall in Love with Nate Grimm

I love all my characters—even the villains in all their wickedness. But I have to say, Nate Grimm, the protagonist in my upcoming release, Grimm Consequences, will always hold a special place in my heart. I think part of the reason I adore Nate is because he was an unexpected hero, meaning, I hadn’t originally intended for him to be my romantic lead in RED (Transplanted Tales #1). But the moment I wrote his description, I knew he was the one for Tess “Red” Little. And although I think there are many reasons why I fell for Nate while writing his and Tess’s love story, here are the top five reasons why I think readers just might fall in love with him, too:

Writing Obsessions

There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it. Only a present that builds and creates itself as the past withdraws.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel by Deborah Moggach

The Titanic was my latest. I binged, reading and watching everything I could about that fateful night. Survivor accounts intrigued me the most, especially the story of the passenger who watched a baby slip through its mothers fingers into the deep dark sea then witness that mother’s sanity unravel as she yanked out her own hair.

After relating this tale at dinner, my mother, concerned, asked, “Why are you always so obsessed with tragedy?” The answer slipped easily from my throat: “I’m half Greek with a splash of Irish. What do you expect?”

When my agent suggested writing a Transplanted Tales novella to offer my readers something between the release of Along Came a Spider (#3) in August 2013 and Ever After (#4) a year later, I knew exactly what story I was going to tell.

When I originally conceived the idea for Red, the first book in my Transplanted Tales series, I had planned to write a trilogy that chronicled the gritty crime fighting adventures of Tess “Red” Little (a/k/a Little Red Riding Hood) and her detective/grim reaper boyfriend, Nate Grimm. For this reason, I’d been intentionally vague about Nate’s background because I’d always intended to give him a story of his own.

But when it came time to plan the subsequent novels, my editor thought some of the other characters should have their own book and a chance at Happily Ever After, and asked me to write the series more as paranormal romance than urban fantasy. So that’s the direction we took.

As happy as I’ve been with this approach, and as much as I’ve enjoyed exploring the mysteries and romances of the other couples, I still desperately wanted to tell Nate’s tale and give readers some additional insight into his story and his love for Tess. I just needed to figure out when and how to do it.

The “how” was easy: From the moment I wrote the description of Nate in the first few pages of Red, I knew the dark past he was so eager to forget would eventually come back to haunt him. In fact, in order to set the stage for this eventuality, I began dropping hints in The Better to See You and Along Came a Spider, insinuating that Nate and Tess had been through a lot since the end of Red and that their love was even stronger for it.

So when I was offered the chance to tell the rest of Tess and Nate’s story in the form of a novella, I was ecstatic! And, I have to say, I had a great time revisiting my old friends and am very proud of how the novella turned out. I hope readers will have as much fun reading Grimm Consequences as I had writing it.

Now, to give you a peek at what’s in store for Tess and Nate, here’s the official blurb for Grimm Consequences, releasing April 17, 2014:

You reap what you sow…

Saying Nate Grimm has a dark past is an understatement. Fortunately, no one’s bothered to look too closely at the Fairytale Management Authority’s lead detective and part-time Reaper. And that’s the way Nate wants to keep it. For after centuries of torment and loneliness, he’s finally found happiness with the hot and hard-charging love of his life, Tess “Red” Little.

Of course, his love for Tess is the reason there’s a posse of Reaper judges after him, led by a sadistic bastard acquainted with Nate from once upon a time. Now, Tess will pay the price for Nate’s transgressions unless Nate severs his ties to the transplanted Tales—and Tess—forever. His enemy has the advantage in speed, malice and brutality. But the Reapers have underestimated the depth of Nate’s love and devotion. And the fury of his wrath…

Kate SeRine (pronounced “serene”) faithfully watched weekend monster movie marathons while growing up, each week hoping that maybe this time the creature du jour would get the girl. But every week she was disappointed. So when she began writing her own stories, Kate vowed that her characters would always have a happily ever after. And, thus, her love for paranormal romance was born. Kate currently writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance and is the author of the award-winning Transplanted Tales series, available from Kensington Books.

Kate lives in a smallish, quintessentially Midwestern town with her husband and two sons, who share her love of storytelling. She never tires of creating new worlds to share and is even now working on her next project.

Guest Post: Nephilim Myths and Fascinations by Harmony Lawson

Hi Guys, and welcome to my stop in the Apocalypse of Angels: Seeing Angels Tour. I'm so fortunate to have Harmony Lawson come by and talk about Nephilims.
So, give her a warm welcome, and make sure to check out the links in the bottom so you can find her again!

Nephilim Myths and Fascinations

Sometimes just having faith is all one needs to get through the day.

Nephilim are a breed of human and angels. It is said that angels (sons of God) came to earth and had relations with human women (daughters of men). The mix of the two beings created what is called Nephilim. Supposedly these children were super humans and it could even be said that Goliath was a Nephilim. Nephilim are in the pre-flood phase of the bible in Genesis. God created the flood to wipe the Earth of them.

http://spirituality.knoji.com/nephilim-myths-and-facts/ has excellent photos of archeological sites where super human bones were discovered.

My fascination are with angels and when I started to study them, I discovered Nephilim were a cross breed of angels. Angels are mentioned throughout the bible approximately 273 times. There have been many sightings over the centuries of angels that is too numerous to count. Many prophets and disciples have had encounters with angels. Nephilim are mentioned in Genesis and in Numbers.

Bible verse I used to get the back story for my angels:

Genesis 6:2-4: (NIV Women’s Devotional Bible) When men began to increase in number on earth and the daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal, his days will be a hundred and twenty years. The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. Gen 6:1-4 NAS

The more I study angels and Nephilim, the more fascinated I’m becoming. Even though I write fiction, I truly believe in the world of Angels, Heaven and Hell.

Harmony Lawson studies Angels and works full time as a writer. When her head isn’t in the clouds, she is procrastinating doing the housework because her pets want too much of her attention. And when it’s sunny out, she is learning how to garden. She aspires to be a cat lady when she gets older and wear purple and drink margaritas.

Author Bio:

Harmony Lawson was born on a naval base in San Diego, California. Currently, she and her family live in Northern California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Her education is in drawing, painting, and writing. When she read her first romance novel at age 16, she became a hopeless romantic.
Harmony is fascinated by angels, and she incorporates research in angels, the Nephilim, and fallen angels into her fictional stories. Many of the descriptions in her books reflect actual documentation found in religious documents.
While she has endured many hardships in life, she believes life will be better tomorrow. Life has its ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and Heaven and Hell. She believes the bad times are a test to prove a person’s worth. Her books reflect on that concept.

About the Book:

Camille Harper, about to finish high school, can see angels all around her. They appear to watch her. She has been able to see angels from birth, and while she is amused by this ability, she just wants a normal life with friends, family, and good times. Why can she see angels? She doesn't know, but she believes the knowledge will change everything. Then she witnesses a confrontation between a beautiful angel and a dark winged creature. The strange event will signal the end of normal life.

Did the strange beings know she could see them?

Her friends want her to sneak out to an abandoned house for parties, but her instincts scream “NO!” Something is not right about the place. The hip new guy in school, Earl, wants to date, but she is afraid he will disturb her circle of friends, and there is something not right about him. Her parents aren’t doing well together. And whatever strange plot is developing, her sister may be in the middle.

Now, for the first time, Camille Harper is interacting with angels face to face. This is incredible, but when Jason Waters enters her life, she gets more than she bargained for. Her strange ability complicates life on a whole new level. Camille and Jason enter an exciting but forbidden relationship.

Strange beings present danger. What’s a Nephilim? What are fallen angels up to?

Jason believes something is strange with Earl, but Jason is hiding things from Camille as well. Which one is right for her? Are they both trying to possess her for supernatural reasons?

Camille just wants to make it through the year and graduate from high school, but changes are leading up to some apocalyptic event.

Can Camille continue Seeing Angels without her life going to Hell?

Guest Post from Cary Jones, Author of Sunkissed

I'm a happy girl today, because I have no other than the wonderful Carys Jones coming by telling us about her inspiration behind her book; Sunkissed. :-) Hope you enjoy, and please make sure to go by some of her pages and give her some love!!

Inspiration for Sunkissed:

Initially, when I set out to write Sunkissed I wanted to write the vampire story that I’ve always wanted to read. As an avid fan of the genre I drew upon films and books that I’ve loved to help me decide which direction my own book would take within the mythology.

More than anything I wanted a strong, female lead character who becomes a vampire. So often in vampire stories we see the female characters falling for a vampire and being pulled in to that world so I wanted to subvert that.

The main character, Dawn, goes on a journey where on the point of almost dying she is turned. This then influences her own life and the lives of those around her. I wanted to explore how she would react to and ultimately handle this drastic change.

Dawn is inspired by the female icons of 1950s Hollywood, like Audrey Hepburn. She is small with delicate features, seemingly fragile but she hides an inner strength which is what guides her throughout her life post transition.

I wanted to create a female character readers could identify with. Dawn is a moral, loving girl who just wants a normal, quiet life, and she is willing to fight for that.

In contrast there is the character of Doctor Moralus. Being a bit Dickensian with his name, I chose to identify him as without morals. His physique draws on the very first iconic images of Nosferatu. He is menacing in a very traditional way, and setting him up like that helps link the original vampire myth with my modern re-spinning of it.

About the Author:

Carys Jones was born in Shropshire, England. She displayed a passion for writing from a young age, spending her time creating short stories and poems. Carys later went on to study Creative Writing at University level. Her first book, Not All Stars Sparkle, was released in October 2010 and was a finalist for The People's Book Prize 2013.

Her second novel, Sunkissed, was released in Autumn 2013.

Author Take Over: Dama Blythe, author of Immortal Eyes

Hi Guys,
Today (a little later than usual, I know), I'm proud to present this weeks Author Take Over; Dama Blythe!!! Please give her a warm welcome, and make sure to stop by her pages to give them some love afterwards. If you want to know my thoughts on Immortal Eyes - look at the previous post :-)

So, without delaying anymore... I'm handing over my blog to Dama:

Guest post from author Dama Blythe:

“Immortal Eyes” brings together some of my favorite things: the mysterious and magical, the Appalachian Mountains, and the written word.
I was born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwestern Virginia. There is one thing you learn early here in these mountains:  the magical and the mysterious exist all around you. Growing up in the embrace of some of the oldest mountains in the world, and encircled by the third oldest river in the world (the New River), you become aware of the energy that exudes from the Earth itself. You cannot help but to be touched by the energies buried deep in the sediment here.

I remember walking through the mountains and forests when I was a child, and seeing the hidden shacks hidden back in the trees, nearly impossible to see – camouflaged, almost having become a part of the mountain itself. I dreamed of who might live in those humble homes, spirited off away from any contact with the world. Granny women, who stop blood with the magic of a Bible verse or cure the croup with a concoction of roots and bark. Spirits that roam throughout the mountains, and inhabit old farmhouses. Noises in the night that have no explanation. That was the backdrop to my childhood.
Growing up, I never discounted these things. I never went through that awkward period between childhood stories and adult explanations. Even now, in my middle age, I refuse to listen to reason, choosing instead to hear the magic calling from the trees.

Writing offers a place to capture the stories whispered in the depths of the hollows here. If you’ve ever studied the mystical arts (or even studied the cultures that practice them) then you know that the word is powerful. The most exquisite detail can be shared with perfect precision. Stories are a part of our deep subconscious need to connect with our past, put our dreams into words, and understand the world around us.
Now that “Immortal Eyes” is published, I have begun working on the next book in the series, which will explore more of the mysteries and magic of the Appalachian Mountains. I hope you will join me for more exciting journeys.
For those of you who haven’t yet read “Immortal Eyes,” here are a few excerpts to introduce you to the characters telling the story. These are a few of my favorite lines from each of the voices in the novel.
Shalyn Trent: “It seemed to her that everyone in the bar could hear the racing of her heart or, at the very least, see the pounding artery at her pale throat. The man did not seem to notice her at all, which opened up a whole new paranoia. What if he was trying to disguise that he was watching Shalyn? She began to fear that the scream which was collecting itself in her throat would escape. Then this strange man looked her directly in the eye, and smiled. Shalyn began to run through the crowd, though to her it seemed she was not moving at all.”
Frank Vant: “He was sitting at his usual table, drinking his usual beer… He wondered for what must have been the millionth time, if it had all been for nothing. Beer now had a more pleasant taste but everything else had gone to hell… He felt so old and alone… As he absent-mindedly tucked a loose piece of his raven black hair back into the rubber band at the nape of his neck, his fingers brushed across the leather string there. For a moment he was overtaken by the urge to rip it off and let nature take its course…Then the door opened cautiously beside him and his heart stopped momentarily. The time had indeed come at last.
Eddie Jackson: “He lit a Marlboro from his freshly opened pack and leaned his six foot frame against the utility pole. He felt a little like James Dean and a whole lot like the Big Bad Wolf…He caught a glimpse of her through the pale curtains as she slipped into a gown… ‘Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum. Watch out little piggy, ‘cause here I come,’ he whispered to himself.
Raoul Francois de Valpres (the voice of the journal):  “She is somehow ethereal with some form of earthiness which keeps her from vaporizing into sheer light. I cannot place exactly where her beauty emanates from – her lustrous hair, exquisite features, the tiny-ness of her feet, tinkling of her laughter, huskiness of her whispers or perhaps it is simply the way her gaze touches me and leaves heat in its wake upon my skin…she twirled around the room on bare tiptoe to silent song until she collapsed, giggling in my arms… My arms have never felt as empty as they have since she pirouetted away.”
Zendella D’Ouveau: “Zendella listened to the familiar creaking of the antique rocking chair mixed with the spring peepers’ song across the mountain… Somehow the rocker had aged with Zendella, acquiring the creaks and groans which comprise the personality and wisdom of each…Her heart skipped a beat in recognition of the fact that Old Mother Earth would claim her soon, unless everything happened on time…Her fragile shoulders shuddered at the thought. But there were some things not etched in stone, instead they simply dangled from the tiny web that destiny spins…and eventually destroys.”

Guest Post from Karen Greco, Author of Hell's Belle & Giveaway!

Hi Guys!!
I have the pleasure of having Karen Greco here as a Guest. Hope you enjoy!!

Sabina, you are a brave woman! Thanks for letting me take over your blog for today! Things are about to get noisy up in here!

I have a really weird relationship with music when I write. Sometimes I really need it to power through a chapter. The right music at the right moment can influence the mood of the story. Other times, I find music a frustrating distraction.

What I wasn't expecting, however, was music to inspire me when I wasn't writing. I crank up the iPod when I work out, and often mid-run or mid-lift, I come to a dead stop, completely struck by an idea that was inspired by the music flowing through my earbuds. You have no idea how many workouts this has ruined! I would try really hard not to pack up and go, but when inspiration strikes, sometimes you just have to go with it.

I wanted to share a playlist of songs that influenced Hell's Belle, but in a less concrete and more "mood setting" way.

For example, I love Flogging Molly. And every fight scene I wrote was was paced to their music, even if I wasn't listening to it at the time. Similarly, Incubus struck the right mood for Hell's Belle. Their music reminds me of cold, snow slick roads and grey winter skies. Even Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz inspired certain moments between Max and Nina (and someone else who I won't mention).

It may have been a full scene, a fleeting few lines, or just a small moment captured, but the songs on the following playlist (all saved in my Spotify or Pandora accounts) influenced the story around Nina and company. Hope you enjoy it!

About the book:

Half-vampire, half-human, Nina Martinez spent most of her life underground as part of an elite secret team of government agents who quietly take down rogue monsters -- the human world none the wiser.

She moves back to her hometown of Providence, RI to keep an eye on the recent uptick in supernatural activity, and to help run the bar she co-owns with her aunt. Her attempt at a “regular” life, not to mention a budding relationship with smoking hot FBI agent Max, is cut short because of a string of ritual murders targeting the city's community of witches.
But Nina's investigation unearths deadly secrets from her long buried parents. Now the target of supernatural assassins, could Nina be the most dangerous vampire hybrid to ever exist? No wonder she can’t get a date.

About the Author:

An award-winning playwright, Karen Greco has spent close to twenty years in New York City, working in publicity and marketing for the entertainment industry.
A life-long obsession with exorcists and Dracula drew her to urban fantasy, where she can decapitate characters with impunity. HELL'S BELLE is her first novel.
